How Do You Save Money On Food While Travelling

3 min read

To me, one of the greatest parts during my travels is food. Eating is one of my favourite activities, and if I could, I would eat 24/7. Food is also one of the top expenses, in everyday life and travel.

Be it fresh croissants in Paris, Doro Wat in Ethiopia or Gelato in Italy, food and trying different cuisines are an elemental part of us. It is unquestionable not to eat at the country or culture you're part of during your journey. However, eating out can take a huge chunk off your budget, and you will end up going home sooner than planned.

It is tricky managing money during travels. Some people are gifted with money management and some just aren't. The cost of airline tickets and hostels already use up most of the budget and you don't have to break the bank on food while travelling.

Invest In A Water Bottle

As a traveller, you're always on your feet whether it's hiking or sightseeing. Staying hydrated is paramount and it is foolish to be spending money on bottled water all the time. Put it this way - if a bottle of water costs $1 and you buy three a day, it adds up to $90 in a month! Safe drinking water is available in abundance in most countries. Instead, invest in a light, durable stainless steel bottle.

Cook When You Can

Buying and cooking your food is the easiest option. Hostels, AirBnB and Couchsurfing all offer kitchens and if you want to save money on food, cook. With Couchsurfing, it is a kind gesture to cook for the hosts.

Familiarise yourself with the location of grocery stores near you. You can stock up on nibbles for the midnight snacks, and packs for the journeys.

Pack Your Own Meals

The easiest way to save money. Sandwiches are easy to make and are light on the pocket. Pack a lunch and head out to the park. It's also a great way to meet locals.

Hiking is a common activity in most itineraries. It is also difficult finding places to eat during a hike. What you're looking for when you pack your travel-friendly meals is something that's easy to carry.

A few examples for easy to pack meals:

  • Instant oatmeal with fruits
  • Protein Bar
  • Salami and cream cheese sandwich
  • Pesto pasta salad with cherry tomatoes

Street Food

Granted, not all street food is healthy but they're cheap, delicious and available everywhere. To me, street food is the best food that is available in every city and it gives the culinary authenticity of the region. My taste for street food has not only made my stomach stronger but, it has saved me in plenty of broke times.

Free Breakfasts

Most hotels offer free breakfast with the stay, be sure to completely exploit this. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and filling breakfast only gives you energy for the days adventures.

Lunch Specials

Many restaurants in the world offer lunch specials with discounts of up to 30 - 40%.
